On August 8, 2024, Alibaba Cloud launched a groundbreaking AI-driven domain name application at its Wanwang launch conference. The service, built on the Tongyi model, is designed to revolutionize the domain name registration process by generating creative, relevant domain names based on a user’s brand name and industry. This new tool drastically reduces the time and effort required to find the perfect domain name, shifting the process from “brain-work” to “computing.”

Domain names, the essential web addresses that anchor the digital presence of businesses, are crucial for the stable operation and sustainable growth of the internet. With 31.6 million registered domain names, China holds a 9.4% share of the global market, ranking second worldwide.

Alibaba Cloud’s acquisition of Wanwang in 2009 positioned it as a leader in domain name services. The latest AI enhancements allow users to generate domain names quickly and easily, supporting businesses in building their digital footprint and expanding internationally. Ma Jihua, a senior telecommunications industry analyst, praised the new service for easing the domain name selection process, which is critical for enterprises seeking to establish a strong online presence.

In addition to its AI advancements, Alibaba Cloud is expanding its domain name offerings, introducing over 40 new suffixes such as “.ai,” “.car,” and “.me.” The company now manages more than 200 registered suffixes and offers access to over 20 million global domain names for trading.

The value of domain names is on the rise, especially as they become more integral to digital branding. The domain “AI.com,” for instance, was purchased by OpenAI for at least $11 million in 2023, reflecting the increasing demand for AI-related domain names. Zhang Liang, Vice President of Alibaba Cloud’s SMB Business Department, expressed confidence in the market’s growth potential, especially as Chinese enterprises expand globally.

Gao Kun, General Manager of Alibaba Cloud’s SMB Business Department, emphasized that as the digital ecosystem grows, the number of domain name users will continue to increase. The new AI-powered tools will be key in supporting this growth by providing businesses with the right domain names to thrive in the AI era.
